LIVE. Athletics at the 2024 Olympics: Robert-Michon in the final, Gletty far from the podium, no first medal, live

Here we go for the events athletics of the Olympic Games which will take place from 1st to 11 août.

The essentials

  • On this second day, many athletes will be competing at the Stade de France this Saturday, August 3, starting with the return of decathlete Makenson Gletty. The mixed 4x400m relay will try to get an Olympic medal and the repechage in 800m (W) and 1500m (M) will have their last chance.
  • For her debut at the 2024 Olympics, Mélina Robert-Michon began her discus qualifications this Friday evening with her best throw of the year. She finished 3rd in her qualifying series and will compete in her fourth Olympic final. Engaged in the triple jump, Ilionis Guillaume is heading to the final. It doesn't work for Sarah Madeleine, 17th in her 5000m series. In the decathlon, Makenson Gletty finished the first day at provisional 10th place after two personal records broken in the shot put and 400m. The decathlete is more than 200 points from the podium. In the mixed 4×400 relay, the French finished 2nd and broke the national record, which means they qualified for the final. In the 800 meters, Rénelle Lamotte finished second in her heat. On the other hand, Anaïs Bourgoin, who broke her personal record, and Léna Kandissounon will go through the repechages this Saturday. No first medal for French athletics. In the 10,000m final, Jimmy Gressier finished at 13th place in a stratospheric race, finishing under the mythical 27-minute mark.

For this second day of athletics events, several French athletes will be at the Stade de France:

  • Makenson Gletty: final five events in the decathlon (110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, 1500m)

21:55 – An update on the d& eacute;ecathlon

After the first day, German Leo Neugebauer leads the Olympic decathlon event. Here is the provisional podium after the first five events, as well as Makenson Gletty's place:

21:46 – Mixed balance sheet for Gressier

After a crazy race, Jimmy Gressier finally finished in 13th position. He became the first Frenchman to go under 27 minutes in the 10,000 m with a stratospheric time of 26.58.67. The first title awarded on the Stade de France track was awarded to Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei, who smashed the Olympic record (even Jimmy Gressier beat it) in 26,43,14. Berihu Aregawi (Ethiopia) and Grant Fisher (United States) complete the podium.

After the halfway point, Jimmy Gressier can break the French record and become the first Frenchman in less than 27 minutes.

At the start of the race, Jimmy Gressier is among the leaders of the race.

21:20 – Only final of the day

Tonight, only one final is on the program in athletics, that of the men's 10,000m. The race has just started.

21:10 – Two chances for medals

This evening, Jimmy Gressier and Yann Schrub will try to win the first medal in French athletics at the 2024 Olympics. The two athletes are lined up in the final of the 10,000m which will start in ten minutes.

After the first day, Makenson Gletty is 10th in the decathlon rankings with 4381 points. The tricolor athlete is 'agrave; 207 points on the podium, the last place being held by the Norwegian Sander Skotheim.

What a trick from Makenson Gletty! For his last event of the day in the decathlon, the Frenchman finished second in the 400m in 47'48' ;quot;, thus beating his personal record at the same time. 

20:43 – Gletty is back!

After failing to clear 2.02m in the high jump, Makenson Gletty will make his comeback in ; 8:50 p.m. to compete in the 400m. The decathlete will be in the second race.

20:35 – Cruel for Bourgoin!

Fourth in her series, Anaïs Bourgoin can have regrets. She will have to go through the rep&echages after having beaten her personal record.

Although she set a new personal record in 1'58"47, Anaïs Bourgoin finished at fourth place in her series and should compete in the repechages alongside Léna Kandissounon.

While Mélina Robert-Michon was in the first group where she was 3rd, the qualification of the second group in discus lacing (F) has just started.

The selection of the French team for the Olympics

The final selection of the list of athletes participating in the athletics events will be published on July 8, 2024 (May 14 for the marathon). However, some athletes have already achieved the Olympic minimums and are expected to be included in the list, which allows a maximum of three athletes per discipline. 50% of places will be allocated by the minimums, and 50% via the world ranking.
