We knew that the progress of AI promised the best in terms of health. But this innovation goes even further than we imagined. In a recent study, Iraqi and Australian researchers presented a new tool capable of diagnosing health problems from a simple photo of your tongue. Their research was published in the journal Technologies.
Impressive results
Far from being a gadget, the effectiveness of this AI in detecting a condition is said to reach 98% for certain pathologies. This is particularly the case for gastrointestinal problems, diabetes, and other problems.
To train this tool, scientists collected 5,200 photos of patients' tongues and then carefully added information about their diagnoses. No fewer than six algorithms are used to develop this new medical gem. The test phase also involves examining 60 tongues from two university hospitals in the Middle East.
Quoted by the New York Post, Ali Al-Naji, a professor at the Middle Technical University in Baghdad and the University of South Australia and lead author of the study, comments:
Typically, diabetics have a yellow tongue, cancer patients have a purple tongue with a thick, greasy coating, and stroke patients have an unusually shaped red tongue. A white tongue can indicate anemia; People with severe COVID-19 are likely to have a dark red tongue.

Based on this very encouraging result, the researchers hope that one day this innovation will be used in a mobile application. Javaan Chahl, co-author of the study and professor at the University of South Australia, explains: “These results confirm that computerized analysis of the tongue is a safe, effective, user-friendly and affordable method for screening diseases, which supports modern methods on a centuries-old practice”.
