It wasn't necessarily very clear, but it's now much clearer. In a press release published this Monday, the public prosecutor, Laure Beccuau, revealed the details of the facts alleged against Pavel Durov, the co-founder of Telegram arrested at Le Bourget airport last Saturday. Let's take stock.

12 charges

The leader of the application is notably prosecuted for ” laundering of crimes or offenses in an organized gang “. But it does not stop there and the grievances of the French authorities can be summed up by a moderation deemed insufficient of instant messaging and a collaboration deemed too weak with the police.

The justice system further specifies that the proceedings concern a ” refusal to communicate, upon requests from the authorized authorities, the information or documents necessary for the realization and exploitation of interceptions authorized by law “. Or again: ” complicity in the distribution, offering or making available in an organized group of images of minors of a pornographic nature”, as well as for ” complicity in the acquisition, transportation, possession, offering or transfer of narcotics”.

Emmanuel Macron defends himself

To give himself time, Pavel Durov's police custody has been extended until Wednesday, August 28. Meanwhile, French leaders are accused by Russia of having intervened politically in this affair.

For example, the Russian ambassador to international organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, believes that this arrest illustrates the ” very alarming totalitarian tendencies in countries that called themselves democratic “.

A version firmly denied by Emmanuel Macron on X (formerly Twitter):

The arrest of the Telegram president on French territory took place as part of an ongoing judicial investigation. This is in no way a political decision. It is up to the judges to decide.

For its part, Telegram is also trying to defend Pavel Durov: “Nearly a billion users worldwide use Telegram as a means of communication and as a source of vital information. We expect a rapid resolution of this situation. »

If you want to know more about this complex story, we invite you to reread our previous articles. The first recalls the essential facts of the arrest. The second focuses on Pavel Durov, an atypical entrepreneur.

What to remember:
