After the R5 and the 4L, Renault unveils the electric R17: 3 things to know

A little over fifty years ago, Renault launched what was then a “concentrate of the idealistic explosion of the 1970s“. A new sports coupé with sleek lines, available as a four-seater coupé or a convertible: the Renault 17. Produced in over 92,000 units between 1971 and 1979, Renault's latest creation was then tailored to suit an ever more demanding clientele.

The Renault 17 is back in electric ? So yes, but no

In 2021, Renault revisited its very popular 4L, with a new high-flying electric model. The following year, it was the 5 Diamant prototype, a surprising electric show car, which celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the R5 by reinterpreting the essential city car. Last year, Renault presented the Twingo electric show car. Today, Renault continues its collaboration with contemporary designers to create concepts that reinterpret the brand's heritage.

As you will have understood, based on the emblematic Renault 17 sports coupe, the R17 electric restomod x Ora Ïto is a sculptural reinterpretation of this model born in 1971. For Renault, it is not at all a question of presenting any future vehicle, but simply of revealing a vision of this historic car that is both bold and modern.

The same monocoque structure as the Renault 17

Designed as a restomod by Ora Ïto and built on the monocoque structure of the original vehicle, this new R17 electric restomod retains the cabin, doors, windows, glazing and seals as well as the technical support surfaces. The car is however wider (by 17 cm), while its exteriorized wings and wheels give the car a look that is, to say the least, racy.

Despite its retro side, this new creation is intended to be very modern, as evidenced by the headlights in four rectangular modules with rounded corners or the rear lights simplified into a single crossing strip. 2024 requires, no thermal engine here, since we find a 100% electric engine of 270 horsepower, installed at the rear of the vehicle. Let us recall on this subject that the small electric R5 is soon arriving in dealerships, with its very popular neo-retro look.

A 100% electric restomod… and a unique piece that does not prefigure a future production vehicle

On board, the restomod version retains the comfortable universe of the original model, by integrating modifications to the dashboard and the original central console. It includes in particular a central screen integrating the Renault graphic environment of today, without forgetting four small geometric screens behind the steering wheel renewing the spirit of the counters of the time.

As mentioned above, this R17 electric restomod x Ora Ïto is a unique piece that does not prefigure a future production vehicle. The vehicle is  exhibited at MAISON5 in Paris until September 11, and will be presented at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille competition from September 12 to 15. Finally, it will be exhibited on the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show from October 14 to 20.
