The iPhone 16 hides a major innovation under its hood

If you already own an iPhone 15, you’ll have a hard time impressing the iPhone 16, unless you plan on using Apple Intelligence (which won’t be available in French until 2025) or if you’re a gamer (indeed, the iPhone 16 has a more powerful processor). However, under the hood, the iPhone 16 is likely hiding a significant design innovation. Indeed, Apple has revised the internal design of its base model to make battery replacements easier. And this was vaguely mentioned by the firm, when announcing the iPhone 16.

“The internal design of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus has also been redesigned to house an even larger battery and dissipate heat, while facilitating possible interventions on the battery”, we read in the press release published by Apple. For the moment, it is not known to what extent battery replacements are facilitated by this new internal design. But it is possible that these changes were made to comply with new EU rules on product design, which will apply from June 2025.

Easy-to-replace batteries in 2025

As TÜV Sud explains, these battery rules require electronics manufacturers to make portable batteries easily replaceable by users themselves. Since Apple has not shared details on the improvements it has made to the design of the iPhone 16, we will have to wait for the release of this new model, and the feedback after teardowns (like those of iFixit) to know what the evolutions are.

But in any case, it is possible that with this change it brings to the internal design of the iPhone 16, Apple is preparing for compliance with the new EU rules, and that next year, this design that facilitates battery replacements will be applied to all models of the iPhone 17 series.

  • Compared to the iPhone 15, the iPhone 16 supports Apple Intelligence thanks to a higher RAM memory, and also has a better processor for gaming
  • But besides that, the Cupertino firm has also revised the internal design to make battery replacements easier
  • It is possible that Apple made this change in order to prepare for new EU rules that require batteries to be easy to replace by users themselves
