Unsurprisingly, Joker: Madness à Two divides the critics, who seem to have generally remained hungry. At the time of its screening at the Venice Film Festival, it received an average score of 54/100 on Meta Critic. On Rotten Tomatoes, with 51 reviews, the score rises to 63% positive opinions. While Lady Gaga's performance or the visual qualities of the film are praised, the rest more widely divides the American and French press. Le Parisien speaks of a “breathtaking” film in which Lady Gaga “shines the screen”, Tél&eacuterama salutes the “thunderous couple” formed by the two actors in this “rhythmic suite” which mixes melodrama, trial story and musical comedy.”

But Le Monde criticizes the film for not showing “great inventiveness” and offers an “unequaled show”. For Premiere, “this sequel to Joker, in the form of a depressive musical, is so dull and ineffective that it almost looks like a complete sabotage by Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix”, while Le Point considers that “the fire never catches” and that the film “lacks madness”. Les Numériques, for its part, salutes the film's ambition to “dismantle everything the original film created and to go against the audience's expectations” in a “kamikaze sequel delivered with panache, but without substance”.

On the English-language press side, it is hardly more convincing. The Independent speaks of an “ingenious and deeply disturbing film”, while IGN deplores “its unexploited potential” in a sequel that “tells nothing new”. This second “episode is a boring and uninteresting film” for Vanity Fair, “a little light and sometimes bland” for The Hollywood Reporter. Variety considers for its part that the concept of mixing opposing genres, however “audacious” it may be, “is not well executed in this film.” But as is often the case with cinema, it is the audience who will have the final say in determining whether it will surpass the success of the first installment.
