Why you should never put an AirTag around your dog or cat's neck

Apple has been offering its customers its small AirTag sensors for a few years now. Thanks to AirTags, which emit a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by devices on the Find My network that are nearby. This is useful for finding your wallet in the house (the AirTag emits a small beep), but also (and above all) for keeping an eye on your bike, your handbag, your luggage when you go on a trip, or even a pet!

An AirTag for your pet is not necessarily a good idea

Indeed, if the AirTag recently allowed a Californian user to get her hands on a rather unexpected treasure, Apple's small sensor is also very popular with dog and cat owners. So, when your pet goes missing, rather than plastering the city walls with posters, a simple glance at the application allows you to locate your dog or cat.

However, as practical as they are, AirTags are not necessarily intended to equip our pets. Indeed, trackers as a whole are not suitable, and can even constitute a certain danger. The small battery in AirTags can be fatal if the device is ingested by a dog, for example.

Added to this is a certain form of inefficiency, particularly in the countryside, where there is a greater tendency to see one's cat or dog run away. In rural areas, the signal is less precise than in a city (or even a village), and the AirTag's location may be ineffective.

For animals, in addition to the installation of a chip of course, it is advisable to invest in a GPS collar dedicated to animals, rather than an AirTag, which should be seen more as a connected key ring dedicated to the location of everyday objects. In addition, some malicious people could be tempted to come and steal the precious AirTag directly from the pet. Over the years, Apple's AirTags have been used in very original ways, and here is a small compilation.

Remember that Apple's small AirTag sensor is offered at a unit price of €39, but that the American giant offers a pack of 4 at a price of €129 (a little more than €32 per unit).
