Squid Game (season 2): 3 questions we ask ourselves about the event series

© Netflix

At the start of the 2021 school year, Squid Game simply made Netflix tremble. The streaming platform had not bet on this new series straight from South Korea. And yet… Millions of viewers were seduced by the k-drama, making Squid Game a real hit all over the world.

In the space of a few weeks, Squid Gamehas become much more than just a series. It's quite simple: everyone was talking about it and its impact on pop culture is undeniable. The red jumpsuits of the guards in the series were omnipresent on Halloween, sales of white Vans exploded by 7800%, a violent game swept through the playgrounds and a fake cryptocurrency even drove Internet users crazy. We can call it a real phenomenon.

Given the success of Squid Game, it didn't take long for Netflix to announce a season 2 for the South Korean series. After three years of waiting, we have never been so close to the release date of season 2 of Squid Game. So of course, everyone has a lot of questions. Here's everything you need to know about Squid Game season 2.

Let's start with the big question about the sequel to the Hwang Dong-hyuk-directed series: Squid Game season 2 will be released on Netflix on December 26, 2024. The streaming platform will have had fun with our nerves until the end. Indeed, Netflix had told us that season 2 would be released in 2024, but had not specified that the date would, in reality, be closer to 2025.

Good news ? It seems that Netflix has not wanted to follow its guideline of recent times. New seasons of its original productions are now split into two parts in most cases, such as season 3 of Bridgerton, season 4 of You, season 4 of Stranger Things or the final season of Ozark. This generally helps to increase the lifespan of the new batch of episodes, even if it can frustrate more than one viewer. Thus, Netflix seems to want to deviate from its new habit.

Therefore, barring any reversal of fortune, we will be entitled to the 9 episodes (based on season 1, but this remains to be confirmed) on December 26. The wait was probably long enough for Netflix to be lenient.

Will Gi-hun Pick Up From Issue 456 ? Did he really abandon his daughter who he was supposed to join at the end of season 1 to find the organizers and get his revenge ? Will he reallyreturn to the arena to exact his revenge ? Is police officer Hwang Jun-ho still alive despite his fall from the cliff ? Will the Agent take over the organization ? In short, we have a lot of questions about season 2 of Squid Game.

For the moment, no official trailer is available. But Netflix has given us two teasers in the last few weeks. A little something to get our teeth into. It seems that Gi-hun will indeed take No. 456 back to the heart of the arena to exact his revenge. But it is difficult to know a little more at the present time.

If you missed the phenomenon, it's not too late. Season 1 of Squid Game features penniless and indebted people who take part in a children's game tournament with a whopping 45.6 billion won (millions of euros) at stake. There is just one (tiny) detail: losing can be fatal. With so much money up for grabs, many participants will leave their values, ethics, and morals at the door.

Gi-hun is the main character and, unsurprisingly, he emerges victorious from this lethal tournament. Although he won and can forget his financial problems, the victory is bitter. A true social satire, Squid Game shook the viewers who were definitely not indifferent to the questions raised by the series. In season 2 of Squid Game, No. 456 is thirsty for revenge. We just have to see how it will unfold…

Netflix is pinning a lot of hope on the shoulders of season 2 of Squid Game. After three years, there’s no guarantee that the exceptional success of the first episodes will be repeated. What if the phenomenon had gone out of fashion ? What if viewers had grown tired of waiting ? Especially since director Hwang Dong-hyuk had only planned one season of Squid Game. Logically, many fans fear the return of the series, fearing that this season 2 will be an extension to ride on the success of the first season. Nevertheless, the waiting time between the two batches of episodes has something to give us hope. In three years, there is enough to put together a season 2 worthy of the name.

Not content with announcing the official release date of season 2 of Squid Game, Netflix offered us an unexpected bonus. At the end of the teaser announcing the good news, the streaming platform slipped in an equally important piece of information. A season 3 is planned, and it will conclude the series. Even better ? This final season will be released in 2025. Something to be happy about ? Possibly…
