11:40 – Shootings of UN peacekeepers cause outcry international
On Thursday, two Indonesian peacekeepers, a United Nations peacekeeping force, came under Israeli fire in the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, southern Lebanon. The shooting caused a diplomatic outcry. “An attack on a United Nations peacekeeping mission is irresponsible, unacceptable, and that is why we call on Israel and all parties to fully respect international humanitarian law,” reacted the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, this Friday. The same tone was taken by Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations: “I condemn the fact that there was shooting at a United Nations site, injuring two peacekeepers, which constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.” It would not be over: the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out pointing to new Israeli shots on a Sri Lankan blue helmet position in southern Lebanon this Friday.
11:10 – New Hezbollah strike
This Friday, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for a new strike targeting an Israeli military site “with a large salvo of rockets”. It targeted “the Yiftah barracks and its surroundings” and particularly “technical equipment on a crane in Abbad with a guided missile”. Hezbollah assured that it had hit its target.
Iran warned this Friday, assuring that the country was “ready to to defend its sovereignty” if Israel were to attack. Iran “is fully prepared to defend its sovereignty and integrity “Tehran is “protecting its territorial integrity against any aggression targeting its vital interests and security,” declared Amir Saeid Iravani, representative of the Islamic Republic to the United Nations, during a Security Council meeting, reports Le Monde. He explained that Tehran “seeks neither war nor escalation” but will not hesitate if necessary to use its “inherent right to self-defense”. Israel has, in fact, promised to retaliate to the Iranian missile attacks of October 1, which sounded like a response to the assassination of the Palestinian Hamas leader in Tehran and the Lebanese Hezbollah leader, attributed to Israel.
