Squid Game is a real hit on Netflix. The South Korean series features children's games played in a violent manner, often resulting in death. Its success is such that many children have heard of Squid Game, although it is prohibited for children under 16. In the playgrounds, some people reproduce certain tests from the series, to the point of alarming the Ministry of National Education: on LCI, Jean-Michel Blanquer calls for everyone's “responsibility” so that the youngest do not watch the series. “It is obvious that there is responsibility platforms (…), we have seen that it is normally prohibited for those under 16, perhaps we should consider measures that allow for real parental control on such subjects”.

As a reminder, however, parental control does exist on the streaming platform, in the Account tab > Profile and parental control > Access restriction. Jean-Michel Blanquer also called for the responsibility parents: “We won't get anywhere if we don't have a commitment from parents to check more closely what's going on,” he also said. “Don't leave children alone in front of screens.” School principals and college principals have been alerted to the phenomenon, and some parents have therefore been able to receive messages about this series.

In France, Squid Game is causing controversy in schools: children are reproducing the games from the Netflix series. This raises the question of the viewing age limit for this South Korean program. The streaming platform directly mentions on the Squid Game page that this content is reserved for people aged 16 and over, due to its violence. So how do we stop children and those under 16 from watching the series??

Outside of youth accounts, it is possible to set up parental controls on your Netflix account. Simply go to Account > Profile and Parental Control > Access Restrictions. You can then change the age category (content that does not fit into the age limit imposed will no longer be accessible) or target specific content that should not appear, such as Squid Game for example. Please note that if you have multiple profiles that your children can visit, you should impose these restrictions on all profiles.
