It's historic! Intel and AMD team up with Google to save their chips

For decades, x86 architecture has outrageously dominated the PC and computing market as a whole. But ARM-based chips have changed the game. They are now found on most of our smartphones, on Macs, while their arrival on PCs is accelerating. Intel and AMD, two historical heavyweights in the sector, therefore had to react, and they have done so.

An alliance integrating the biggest names in American Tech

The two companies have created an advisory board on the x86 ecosystem. Seeing the names of the companies involved in this project, we quickly understand that it is serious: Microsoft, Google, Meta, Dell, Lenovo, Oracle, and HP. Epic founder Tim Sweeney is also on the list as an expert.

In a statement released for the occasion, the committee promises to expand the x86 ecosystem “by driving cross-platform compatibility, simplifying software development, and providing developers with a platform to identify architectural requirements and features needed to create innovative solutions.”.

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger believes the industry is “on the cusp of one of the most significant shifts in the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades.” decades “. Lisa Su, CEO of AMD confirms and wishes ” ensuring that x86 architecture continues to evolve as the computing platform of choice for developers and customers”.

Why ARM is such a threat to Intel and AMD ?

It's too early to tell the fate of this organization, and its effectiveness will be judged on its own merits. But if these big tech companies are doing this, it's because ARM is overshadowing them. As Les Échos points out, the latter consumes less energy and is less expensive, allowing it to grab 99% of the smartphone market share.

The offensive is now launched on computers. In 2021, Cristiano Amon, the company's CEO, explained to our colleagues: “The new generation of PCs will be transformed under the influence of mobile technologies”. The trend is all the more clear since Nvidia, the semiconductor champion, is working on chips based on the ARM architecture. They could be launched in 2025.

As you can see, this sector is extremely competitive. Moreover, investors are sometimes worried and sometimes euphoric about the future of these companies. To learn more about this topic, feel free to read our dedicated article here.
