Thirty-five people were killed and 43 injured after a car plowed into a crowd in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on Monday night, local police said Tuesday.

Authorities had reported such an incident as early as Monday, but police reported only injuries at the time, and videos were later removed from social media.

On Tuesday, police said a “serious and vicious attack” took place at the Zhuhai Sports Center, killing 35 people and injuring 43.

The driver, a 62-year-old man, “forced his way in with a small SUV and drove into the city’s sports center, knocking people down as they worked out in the aisles “The driver, named Fan, was arrested while stabbing himself with a knife “and was sent to hospital for treatment,” the police said in a statement.

He is in a coma after sustaining injuries including to his neck and is “not fit to undergo questioning,” police added.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for “everything necessary” to be done to treat the injured, and said he hoped the perpetrator would be “punished in accordance with the law.”

China's largest civil and military air show is currently taking place in the same city.
