Projet Montréal members will choose their new leader on March 15, ahead of Montreal's mayoral elections in a year. Potential successors to Valérie Plante will be able to submit their candidacies starting December 9.

Candidates will have until January 31 to express their interest. However, they will have to comply with certain conditions, particularly regarding financing. They will have to collect the signatures of 200 party members from seven boroughs with at least ten signatures in each of them. They will also have to make a personal contribution of $1,000 to the party and raise $7,500 as of the official launch of the campaign scheduled for February 3.
Aspiring leaders will also have to become party members 30 days before filing their candidacy and provide a criminal record check and a declaration of financial interests. Patrick Cigana will act as president of the Projet Montréal electoral committee.
Party members will be called to vote on March 15 to elect their new leader.
Last month, Valérie Plante caused a surprise by announcing that she would not seek a third term. She cited the fact that she did not have “the same level of energy” as in recent years to run in the next election. The names of several Projet Montréal elected officials have been circulating behind the scenes to succeed her, including that of Plateau-Mont-Royal Mayor Luc Rabouin.
Ensemble Montréal is also looking for a leader. Leadership candidates have until December 15 to submit their candidacies, and Aref Salem’s successor will be chosen at the nomination convention on February 16. Recently, the candidacy of Younes El Moustir, the only one to have publicly expressed interest, was rejected by the party.
