Despite the “disagreement” of Québec solidaire spokespersons with his remarks, Haroun Bouazzi is not alone in thinking that political discourse in the National Assembly contributes to intolerance and racism. Several members of the party believe this too.

Members of 13 local and national associations of the left-wing party will propose on Sunday that the party “publicly express its support for Haroun Bouazzi’s remarks regarding the construction of the Other.” Le Devoir was able to confirm this information, first reported by TVA Nouvelles.

Mr. Bouazzi has been the subject of a series of criticisms, mainly from the Coalition avenir Québec and the Parti québécois, since he suggested that the discourse of certain Quebec MNAs promotes racism against Muslims, Blacks, North Africans and Aboriginals.

Even though Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois and Ruba Ghazal have publicly rebuked their MNA for his “clumsy” and “exaggerated” remarks, the local associations of Mont-Royal–Outremont, Laurier-Dorion, Maurice-Richard, Laval, Sainte-Rose, Trois-Rivières, Montréal, Taschereau, Gouin, Bonaventure, Rouyn-Noranda–Témiscamingue, the National Women’s Commission and the Inter-Union Militant Network will ask QS members on Sunday to support a proposal in support of Mr. Bouazzi.

This advocates that the party “denounce the smear campaign to which [the elected official] is subjected.”
