Skeleton Crew (Disney+): Skip or watch the new Star Wars series ?

© Disney+

She intrigued us a lot and we can now see things more clearly. Skeleton Crew, the new Star Wars series, is launching on Disney+. This production, which should mark the end-of-year holidays on the streaming platform, also makes following The Acolyte which left a bad memory to the fans. We watched the first two episodes, here is our first impression.

The Goonies in Space ?

Let's point out from the outset that we are chronologically situated after Episode IX and following the events that occurred in Ahsoka. The official synopsis already gives us an idea of what we are dealing with:

Skeleton Crew follows the journey of four children who, after a mysterious discovery on their apparently peaceful planet, find themselves lost in an unknown and dangerous galaxy. While looking for a way to get home, they will cross paths with Jod Na Nawood.

From the first seconds, the series starts like many other Star Wars productions: a view of space and a ship attacked by pirates. We clearly feel like we're in the introduction to episode 4 with this captain, who is a clever mix between Darth Vader and Bane.

But very quickly, we find an atmosphere that can clearly disconcert the regulars. Especially when one of the children has a bowl of cereal before going to class by taking the school bus in the morning. E.T. or The Gooniesmeet Star Wars in a lineage clearly assumed by the designers of the series. Without the robots and futuristic vehicles, we would be back in the Amblin films of the 80s, but also in Stranger Things, which is already eyeing this niche.

This childish point of view on the universe created by George Lucas is quite enjoyable to follow. These teenagers are thirsty for adventure while the New Republic sells them a world of peace and boring office workers. We also like discovering a new planet (it's a bit of a change from the sand of Tatooine). Over the course of these first two episodes, we let ourselves smile and laugh with this happy gang.

If some feared the worst at the start of this launch, that is not what happened. Showrunners Jon Watts and Christopher Ford succeed in taking us on the adventures of these rascals. The series knows how to take its time in this regard and we end up becoming attached to the characters. Make no mistake, this production that seemed light at first glance has in reality been very finely polished.

No Skywalker on the horizon

The series is indeed an aesthetic success and sometimes dazzles us thanks to the technology “The Volume” which has been the glory days of Star Wars series since The Mandalorian. As for the soundtrack, often a strong point in the saga, it does not leave lasting memories.

If Skeleton Crewmultiplies the references to the universe and that children clearly dream of living Jedi adventures, we should not expect to learn more about the eternal Skywalker saga. The fact of placing the series after episode IX frees it from this straitjacket, and that's all the better. Who knows if this creation will not be the good Christmas surprise and the nugget that will put Star Wars back on track ?

If you have already watched the first two episodes, what did you think of them ? Tell us in the comments.
