Strange World : le dernier Disney ne verra pas le jour dans les cinémas français

Disney

Disney Studios announced Wednesday that their next blockbuster, Strange World, will not be released in theaters in France; it will be broadcast directly on its online platform Disney+. A decision that will have consequences for French theaters. The animation giant intends to make an impression on the French authorities with this decision.

This is the “consequence of the media chronology as practiced in France which we consider unfair, restrictive and unsuited to the expectations of our audiences“, Disney's French president, Hélène Etzi, told Les Echos. This timeline, which was revised in January 2022, governs the dates on which films can be released in theaters, on streaming platforms, on VOD, DVD, Blu-ray and on television.

In France, you have to wait four months to have a film released in theaters on DVD, VOD or Blu-ray, six months to see it on Canal+, 15 on Netflix, 17 on Amazon Prime and Disney+ (which is not a signatory to the agreement) and 22 months on free TNT channels.

These 17 months needed to be able to broadcast its works on its own streaming platform are far too long in the eyes of Disney, which also complains about an exclusivity window (five months) that is far too short before see his film switch to free channels.

This unprecedented decision is a hard blow for French movie theaters, which are already going through a difficult period. Disney specifies, however, that this decision only concerns Strange World. The release of Buzz Lightyear, another Disney animated feature, is scheduled for theaters on June 22. On the other hand, nothing has been decided yet for two other big productions that movie theaters are counting on to get back on their feet: Black Panther and the new Avatar.
