Too many rules: CANAL+ plans to withdraw its pay channels from DTT in 2025

The end of CANAL+ and DTT ? On December 5, CANAL+ announced the withdrawal of its pay channels from DTT, scheduled for June 2025. A blow to Arcom and its tax environment and regulatory, a disconnect with French cinema, and a potential flight towards the stock market.

We imagine that Bolloré knows what he is doing. After the audiovisual police took C8 and Cyril Hanouna against them, determined to oust him from TNT, the businessman took revenge by striking hard.

In a scathing press release, the group explains that it is “suffering from tax and regulatory decisions that are penalizing for its operations in France: an increase in its tax paid to the CNC, threats to its VAT rate, which is directly linked to its status as the leading financier of French cinema, and finally the decision to withdraw C8, the leading TNT channel.” From June 2025, CANAL+ subscribers still on TNT will therefore receive new equipment allowing them to enjoy the 4 pay channels (CANAL+, CANAL+ Cinéma, CANAL+ Sport, Planète) via another system. The two free channels (CNews and CStar) will remain on TNT.

The result, apart from subscribers, will be harsh for French cinema: CANAL+ contributes 190 million euros per year, but as reported by Les Jours, this participation is now conditional on the terrestrial broadcasting of its channels. There will therefore be collateral damage. And while some will collapse, CANAL+ could well come out of it with savings, or even a stock market rise.

Ironically, if it can change Bolloré's mind, will it be necessary to rescue Private Hanouna to save the cinema ?
