A report published by the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs (IGAS) highlights the numerous failures in the care of young Lucas, who died in September 2023 at the Hyères hospital in the Var, after spending around ten hours dying in the corridors of the emergency room.

According to a report from the General Inspectorate of Social Affairs, highlighted by our colleagues at Parisien, the “non-detection of a serious illness with an atypical form” is indeed the cause of the young man's death.
As a reminder, the latter had lain in agony for hours on a stretcher in the emergency room of Hyères (Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur), where he arrived around 4 p.m. and died after midnight from septicemia.
Underwater emergencies
According to the report, “the first medical examination takes place nearly 4 hours later”, while the maximum delay provided for by the procedure in Lucas' situation was two hours.
“The blood test was sent to the laboratory at the Toulon hospital center nearly an hour behind schedule compared to the schedule provided by the establishment”, as reported by The Parisien.
The report also supports his family, who regretted being refused access to the emergency room and were outraged by the “late and insufficient” information they were given.
That day, the hospital had had to deal with an exceptional day. The General Inspectorate of Social Affairs points out that 114 people had presented themselves to the emergency room on the day of Lucas' death and seven Smur teams had left, twice as many as normal.
Enough to deprive “the service of the usual resources to ensure its operational balance and interrupting the patient's medical care”, qualifies the report.
