Faced with the controversies that demonize education for emotional, relational and sexual life (EVARS), associations such as Family Planning demand the effective implementation of a program included in the education code since 2001.
Sarah Durocher chairs the Family Planning Association. Eight other associations and four unions have formed a “collective for genuine sexuality education” reaffirming their commitment to the 2001 law, calling on the government to reconsider the remarks made on November 27 by the Minister Delegate for Academic Success and Vocational Education Alexandre Portier.
Three mandatory annual sessions
The latter having stated before the Senate that “activism and gender theory have no place in school”, that “the program is not acceptable”.
The program of education on emotional, relational and sexual life (EVARS) initiated by the former minister Pap Ndiaye, promised for this school year, is under fire from conservatives even before being presented on December 12 to the Higher Council of Education (CSE). “It makes three annual sessions on this education mandatory in high schools, middle schools and primary schools, because the provision is rarely or never respected”, summarizes Sarah Durocher.
“Less than 15% of students benefit from it”, recalled the Economic, Social and Environmental Council which adopted on September 10, its opinion entitled “Education on emotional, relational and sexual life”with 119 votes in favor (out of 175 members), considering that the implementation of the program has become “a societal imperative”.
Several associations, including Family Planning and Sidaction have also filed a complaint against the State “on the non-application of the law”, supports the president. “We hope that the State will be held accountable for what has been put in place to make the law effective. Over the past 20 years, it should be remembered that we have met 150,000 young parents and carried out 3,600 interventions in schools.”
“An adapted program”
Anne Genetet, the Minister of National Education, responded to the controversy, reaffirming the day after her Minister Delegate spoke, from whom she dissociated herself, “that there was no gender theory in this very clear, progressive program adapted to all ages”.

But the brakes are powerful. Hence the creation of a collective composed of around ten organizations with field expertise which will develop in 2023, a White Paper, “a plea” bringing together their arguments, but above all 46 recommendations for public authorities and institutions.
The third insists on the beginning of this sex education, from kindergarten “on the theme of consent and respect for one's own body and that of others”. Which is what the text also recommends. “In kindergarten, it provides for consideration of the body, respect for privacy and equality between girls and boys.”

Enough to make associations like Les mamans louves or SOS Éducation jump and the hundred Republican senators who, through a platform signed on December 1 in Le Figaro, point out the participation of associations “militants” and the presence of terms related to “woke ideology”, while conceding that this education is “useful”.
A budget that should be €55 per student
“We don't talk about sexuality in kindergarten!”, whispers the president of Planning. But about respect. The idea of a wokism is a rhetoric used by anti-rights people. We are often called upon as firefighters, in cases of violence, pregnancies. But we can't be everywhere. The budget should be €620 million, or €55 per student, so that the law can be effective. For the moment, we are funded by communities, already drained.”
“Art of fellatio”, “anulingus”
The fact remains that Catholic education and parents' associations have expressed “serious reserves”. Relayed in its own way, on December 3 by the UDR Ciottist deputy Christelle d’Intorni: “How can you tolerate that educational materials explain to our 11-year-old children the art of fellatio to achieve orgasm, or introduce them to the practice of analingus”. To which Anne Genetet responds: “For older children, we will try to answer questions that children do not always have the answer to”.

Are the criticisms of this program, which extends from kindergarten to high school, well-founded?? Knowledge of the body, identification of harassment situations, sexual health…: what we know about the EVRAS program, from kindergarten to middle school in particular.
In toddlers, feelings, emotions…
In kindergarten, the program focuses on emotional and relational life. It includes consideration of the body, feelings, emotions, respect for privacy and equality between girls and boys. Before the age of 4, it is about knowing your body (naming its different parts), being aware of intimacy, learning to accept and refuse through situations, understanding for example that a job can be chosen by everyone.
From the age of 4, the program focuses on identifying trusted adults, or discovering the different family models: heteroparental, single-parent, homoparental, separated parents, etc..
In elementary school, from CP to CM2, a more scientific approach is offered to students, on their body, with an adapted vocabulary. In CM1, they learn to know the main changes in the body during puberty, to identify situations of harassment or to understand stereotypes to fight against discrimination. In CM2, children learn to identify and protect themselves from sexist and sexual violence, or to know their rights for safe use of digital technology. From middle school onwards, the program covers sexuality. It is about helping students to take ownership of physical and hormonal upheavals, and to grasp the notion of sexuality. The sessions are co-facilitated by teachers, instructors and other stakeholders, particularly medical ones. In 4th grade, sexuality is approached as a "complex reality" (love, reproduction, pleasure), and in terms of health (including risk prevention).
