IN BRIEF

  • Seduced by the beauty and serenity of the region, George and Amal Clooney acquired the 172-hectare Canadel estate in Brignoles, in the south of France, in May 2021.
  • The estate includes a recently renovated 18th-century country house, a swimming pool, a tennis court, a pine forest with a private lake, and has been secured by a fence surrounding the 172 hectares.
  • George and Amal Clooney also own a stunning home on Lake Como in Italy.

George Clooney, when he is not busy with his Hollywood projects, recharges his batteries in Europe, and more precisely in the south of France. He, his wife Amal Clooney and their two children had abandoned their luxurious villa on the shores of Lake Como and their Georgian mansion in Berkshire for their estate in the Var in 2021. They probably discovered the charm of this region thanks to their friend Brad Pitt, who has owned the Miraval estate since 2008. The sun, the tranquility, the art of living… So many elements that attracted George and Amal Clooney. Back to the 172-hectare Canadel estate, à Brignoles.

He was looking for a family property and he liked this one for the beauty of the living environment. He should have come to sign the sales agreement in person on May 6, 2021 for his 60th birthday. Because of Covid, he had to make a power of attorney“, his real estate agent, Vincent Sauvestre, told in the columns of Paris Match Thursday, February 8, 2024. It must be said that this sublime 18th-century country house had everything please. Especially since the Clooney couple had magnified it following a year of work. To lead “a quiet life“, the two lovers had decided to preserve their privacy. Thus, “while his new property had no fence, he had the 172 hectares of olive trees (about 2,000 vines) and the 5 hectares of vines fenced“, reported our colleagues.

Swimming pool, tennis court, pine forest and private lake: &agrave what does George and Amal Clooney's estate look like

As for the house itself ? Its 900 square meters have been renovated. “He redid everything in an Italian style, probably a bit like what he has in his house on Lake Como“, detailed the mayor of Brignoles, Didier Brémond. Parisian decorators, Italian workers, local entrepreneurs… Many of them have paraded at George and Amal Clooney's to make their home a cozy nest. But all of them must in return keep silence, having signed a confidentiality clause. Everything that we will know, is that “working with a celebrity generates a lot of publicity“, confirmed an entrepreneur, while a worker swore that “the Clooneys are very polite, they always come to greet us“.

In addition to the workers, the two lovebirds also employ maintenance staff. “The kingdom has a swimming pool, a tennis court, a pine forest with a small lake hidden from view, all of which require a lot of maintenance“, our colleagues wrote. And the mayor confirmed to them: “There are landscapers every day.” The only downside ? The A8 motorway is next to the Canadel estate. Nevertheless, the Clooneys are not bothered by the noise, the magazine specifies. Nothing seemed to be able to spoil their happiness of living in Brignoles. That is also why George and Amal had settled there the year.

Their villa was not just another holiday resort but rather their main residence. This is why they also wanted to get involved in the region, in local and daily life. “George Clooney told me that he wanted to help Brignoles, a bit like he did for Le Val, during the dramatic floods of 2021, by giving him a check for 20,000 euros. I told him about my idea of a farm where I could produce fruit and vegetables for the schools in the town. He immediately accepted“, rejoiced Didier Brémond.
