The body of former England rugby player Tom Voyce, who went missing after being swept away by a river in northern England, has been found, with his wife saying on Friday she was “absolutely devastated”.

Tom Voyce, 43, went missing at the weekend as Storm Darragh hit the UK, as he was driving home from a night out with friends in northern England where he lived.

The couple had a baby boy

Police suspected the player had tried to drive his car across a river, which had then was swept away by the current, due to rising water levels. A body was found on Thursday, and identification was pending.

On Friday, in a statement posted on the Northumbria Police website, his wife, Anna Voyce, said she was “absolutely devastated and heartbroken” by her husband's death. The couple had a young son.

During his playing career, Tom Voyce played for Bath and London Wasps. He also played nine times for the England national team between 2001 and 2006. He retired in 2013.
