Apple’s AirTags are already extremely effective at locating lost items. But the next version could be even more effective, thanks to a new component that Apple could integrate. As a reminder, the AirTag was launched in 2021 and according to rumors, the firm should announce the AirTag 2 next year.
In his latest newsletter, journalist Mark Gurman (Bloomberg) shares new information about this new tag. According to him, the AirTag should have the same design as the first version. However, Apple would offer more efficient technology.
Indeed, it would equip the AirTag 2 with the same second-generation Ultra Wideband chip as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16. On these smartphones, this chip allows for more precise location between devices, with a better range. And on the AirTag 2, this new Ultra Wideband chip would allow for a range twice as high as on the first version. This range would allow lost tags to be more easily detected on the Locate network, and to be found more easily.

Otherwise, Apple would also improve the design of the AirTag so that it is more difficult for users to remove the built-in speaker. This will dissuade more people from using the AirTag as a spying device, since the speaker can warn a person who is being spied on with an AirTag without their knowledge. On the software side, Apple is already working with Google to make it possible for an Android user to be warned if they are being spied on with an AirTag.
An even more essential accessory
It should be noted that today, the AirTag is gradually becoming an essential accessory for travelers. Indeed, as the AirTag and other tags compatible with Apple's Find My network allow you to find lost luggage, the Cupertino company is collaborating with airlines so that its system can be at their customer service. As a result, it will be possible to use the location functionality, in collaboration with an airline, to find luggage.
- Apple could present a new version of the AirTag in 2025
- According to Mark Gurman, a journalist at Bloomberg, the new version would have the same design, but would use a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip
- This would have a range three times greater than that of the first version of the AirTag
