"I want to put Lozère in the spotlight": Matthieu Hamel elected Mister France Agricole

Matthieu Hamel, 24, from Lozère, was elected Mister France Agricole on Saturday, December 14, 2024, for his second participation. Despite the current agricultural situation, and although some have become discouraged, this young farmer did not want to give up.

Passionate about agriculture since he was little, he believes that this title “rewards [his] profession and what [he does] every day”. The winner has a little thought for his department: “Lozère is magical for me. I am very attached to my department, it does something to me”

Dairy sheep farming

The young breeder was born in Lozère and has always lived there. “My parents showed me around France when I was little. I have never found a department like Lozère, whether for the landscapes or the harmony of the Lozériens among themselves.”

He began his farming career as a miller, before joining a group of employers where he was able to “discover diversified agriculture”, with twelve different bosses. For the past four years, he has been a farm worker in Saint-Bonnet-de-Chirac, on a dairy sheep farm where the milk is used to make Roquefort cheese.

Promoting the installation of young farmers

The theme he wants to advance above all is the installation of young farmers. He himself plans to eventually have his own farm. “I would like to leave something to my son, who is also already interested in agriculture. It is important for me to show that there are motivated young people, proud of what they do and ready to take over.”

“I want to put Lozère in the spotlight. Here, 60% of the inhabitants make a living from livestock farming or agriculture in general. We are one of the most agricultural departments in France. In my opinion, we have a very healthy agriculture to promote”, concludes Matthieu Hamel.

Next deadline for Mister France agricultural, the International Agricultural Show (SIA), in February 2025, where it plans to highlight the competition and represent, among others, young farmers.
