Not a word about the Paralympic Games in the official book of the 2024 Olympic Games: in Montpellier, Tony Estanguet responds to the controversy

The absence of the Paralympic Games in “The Official Book of the 2024 Olympic Games” (Hugo Sport) is not going down well. Asked about this omission by the publisher on the sidelines of his visit to the Parc des Expositions in Pérols for the plenary assembly of the Occitanie Region, Tony Estanguet, the head of the Olympic Games Organizing Committee, did not avoid the question.

If, like everyone else, he regrets this absence, there is no question of taking responsibility for it. “In fact, he specified, it was the licensee who had complete control over this book. The organizing committee did not take care of it at all.”

“The general public waited for the last moment”

Tony Estanguet then invited “everyone to take their responsibilities”. He also took the opportunity to remind us how complicated it had been to sell the Paralympic Games. “Nobody wanted to buy tickets. They had to wait for the success of the Olympics to sell them. The general public waited until the last minute to jump on the ticket office.”

“The same goes for TV rights or publishing. As soon as you publish a book on the Paralympics, it doesn't sell. There is an economic reality. Today, the Paralympic system is not a system that is mature enough to generate significant revenue.”

Tony Estanguet talks about a “collective challenge” to be taken up in the years to come. Like Paris 2024 last summer by giving the Paras the same place as at the Olympic Games.
