The Calédonie ensemble movement resigned Tuesday from the collegiate government at the head of New Caledonia, automatically leading to the fall of the local executive, according to AFP.

In this letter announcing its resignation, the Calédonie ensemble party (centre-right, affiliated with Renaissance) indicates that “since the events of May 13, (the) country has sunk into deep economic and social distress. In such circumstances, solidarity between institutions […] constitutes a burning obligation”.

“A governmental independence self-proclaimed”

“I can only note that this was not the case and I regret it”, indicates in this letter Jérémie Katidjo-Monnier, resigning member of the Caledonian government. He also denounces “a self-proclaimed governmental independence, contrary to the Noumea Accord and the organic law”.

This is the eleventh time that a Caledonian government has fallen following a resignation. The last time was in 2021.
