A ski tourer has been killed in an avalanche in southeastern Switzerland, police said Saturday.

The avalanche occurred Friday at around 1:30 p.m. local time (12:30 GMT) “while two ski tourers were moving a good distance apart from each other from the Cheilon Glacier towards the Pas de Chèvre ladders in the Arolla region”, Wallis regional police said in a statement.

“At one point, the snow mass gave way under the skis of one of them. He was carried away by the avalanche to the bottom of the slope”, the press release adds.

< p>Rescuers flew to the scene by helicopter and quickly located the victim under the snow.

“They proceeded to resuscitation before transporting the unfortunate man to the Sion hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” the police said, specifying that the victim was a Swiss national aged 27. years.

According to the Swiss Institute of avalanche research, the risk in the region is currently classified as “3” on a scale of one to five.

< p>This is the second death in an avalanche this winter in Switzerland after the death on Monday of Sophie Hediger, 26, a member of the national snowboard cross team. She was swept away by an avalanche in Arosa, in the canton of Grisons, in the south-east of the country.

Sophie Hediger, who has two podiums in the World Cup , had participated in the 2022 Olympic Games.
