A decision taken since Monday, January 6, to deal with an influx of patients in the emergency department due to the spread of respiratory viruses in particular.

“In the context of the winter epidemic peak currently affecting the entire national territory and in view of the very high number of patients observed in the emergency department of the Nîmes University Hospital in recent days, the establishment moved to level 3 of the Hospital under Pressure plan on January 6, 2025”, explains this Wednesday, January 8, in a press release, the Nîmes health establishment.

Tensions on reception capacities

“The continued rise in cases of influenza, Covid-19 and bronchiolitis and more broadly respiratory viruses (RSV) is leading to a significant increase in the number of people using emergency departments nationally and in Occitanie”, notes the Nîmes University Hospital, which emphasizes the idea that “this epidemic situation, combined with the resumption of all scheduled activities after the school holidays, is also causing very significant tensions on reception capacities, particularly in emergency departments medicine”.

Thus, within the CHU, “the immediate implementation of the hospital under pressure plan allowed for a rapid adaptation of the reception capacity thanks to the mobilization of all the professionals in the emergency department, the 15 center, the care access service (SAS) as well as all the medical and surgical departments of the establishment”, explains the press service, adding that “this mobilization is accompanied by reinforcements in human resources for the medical and paramedical teams and allows for the continuity of care to be ensured in a context made difficult by the progressive saturation of hospitalization possibilities downstream of the emergencies”.

An organization in the Gard

A measure that extends beyond the doors of the establishment alone Nîmes,“since beyond the measures taken in terms of the internal organization of the establishment and regular exchanges with the teams of the public hospitals of the Gard Cévennes Camargue territorial hospital group (Alès, Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Uzès, Pont-Saint-Esprit), a territorial coordination unit brings together all the establishments concerned in the territory, under the aegis of the ARS Occitanie, in order to monitor the evolution of the situation in real time and to adapt the measures taken to ensure the proper orientation of patients justifying hospitalization”.

The right actions to follow

The Nîmes University Hospital reminds us of the right actions &to adopt in the face of this context: "In the winter epidemic context, it is essential to remind everyone of the need to respect barrier gestures (mask and hydroalcoholic gel) and vaccination for the entire population without distinction of age. In the event of a medical need, it is recommended to call your doctor as a priority. If the latter is not available, it is advisable to consult the map of treatment locations. If no offer is available or in the event of a life-threatening emergency, it is imperative to call 15 before going to the emergency room.”
