The City of Béziers shows its public support for the writer Boualem Sansal, imprisoned on his return to Algeria

The 75-year-old Franco-Algerian author has been imprisoned since November 16 for threatening state security, according to the Algerian government.

A large banner in support of the Franco-Algerian writer, “Free Boualem Sansal”, was affixed by the City to the frontispiece of the André-Malraux media library, on the Place du 14-Juillet, as well as on the Polygone pedestrian bridge.

The author of the novels “2084: the end of the world”, “Rue Darwin” and “The Oath of the Barbarians”, was arrested on November 16 at Algiers airport. He has been incarcerated since that date for endangering state security. Ill, he has been in a care unit since mid-December.

Winner of numerous awards for his novels, he is also very critical of the Algerian government and religions, Islam in particular. He has notably denounced the atrocities of the black decade in the 1990s, the corruption of political and economic circles and Islamist religious figures.
