On January 19, the TikTok app was banned in the United States, before becoming accessible again, following an announcement by Donald Trump. However, the fate of the social network remains uncertain, since the decree that Trump will sign upon his arrival at the White House only postpones the ban, in order to negotiate a lasting solution. And, in the meantime, the Meta group is strengthening Instagram's Reels feature, which is one of the main alternatives to TikTok videos.
This weekend, the group also announced the creation of a new application called “Edits” which is positioned as a direct competitor to CapCut, TikTok’s video creation app. Indeed, while the media mainly talked about the banning of TikTok in the United States, the measure also concerned the other applications of the company ByteDance and its subsidiaries, including CapCut and Lemon8.
An essential tool for creators
CapCut is an essential element of the TikTok ecosystem, since it is on this tool that creators rely to create short videos for the platform from their smartphones. And soon, Instagram will offer a similar tool. The application will arrive in February and it is already possible to pre-order it on the App Store (an Android version will arrive later).

Among the features that will be offered, there is the removal or replacement of the background of a video, effects, an audio enhancement feature, or even an automatic subtitle generator. And thanks to its advances in In terms of artificial intelligence, the Meta group should also be able to compete with CapCut's AI features.
A creation app for Reels
And while Edits allows you to export videos to any platform without a watermark, it also benefits from an integration with Instagram. Indeed, the app will offer a dashboard that will allow you to track the performance of videos on Instagram. “Edits is more than a video editing app, it’s a complete suite of creative tools,” writes Adam Mosseri, the boss of Instagram. It will even allow you to collaborate remotely on video projects.
In any case, Edits should allow Instagram to better compete with TikTok. Indeed, better tools will allow creators to create better videos, which will impact viewership.
