Chinese company DeepSeek has created a buzz by launching an AI model that rivals OpenAI’s o1 reasoning model, developed with limited resources. And while the DeepSeek application is already at the top of the App Store rankings, the company is unleashing another AI called Janus-Pro. This is an AI that can analyze images as well as generate them from text prompts, like OpenAI’s DALL-E 3. And according to DeepSeek’s presentation, the Janus-Pro-7B version outperforms DALL-E 3, but also Stable Diffusion XL, on the GenEval and DPG-Bench benchmarks.

And, once again, DeepSeek is releasing its code under an MIT license, which will allow other players to use the technology. Alternatively, if you want to test this new competitor to Dall-E 3 and Stable Diffusion XL for free, you can use it on the Hugging Face platform. You will be able to test the image analysis capabilities of Janus-Pro-7B, as well as its image generation technology.

Competitors react to the arrival of this new player

Some of DeepSeek's competitors have already reacted to the buzz it has generated after the launch of its language model. “DeepSeek's r1 is an impressive model, especially in terms of what they are able to provide for the price. We will obviously provide much better models and it is also very stimulating to have a new competitor!”,wrote Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, on the social network X. However, he does not discount the company's investments, explaining that it will still be necessary to have a lot of computing power to meet the world's AI needs.

Otherwise, Yann LeCun, chief AI scientist at Meta, explained that DeepSeek's performance should not be seen as China surpassing the United States in the AI race, but rather as open source surpassing proprietary models.

“DeepSeek has benefited from open research and open source (e.g., Meta's PyTorch and Llama). They came up with new ideas and built on other people's work. Because their work is published and open source, everyone can benefit from it. That's the power of open research and open source,” he also wrote.

  • After releasing its chatbot, DeepSeek publishes an AI capable of analyzing and generating images
  • According to him, its Janus-Pro-7B model surpasses DALL-E 3 and Stable Diffusion XL on certain benchmarks
  • The head of OpenAI and a Meta manager have already reacted to the arrival of this new competition in the AI race
