What if Microsoft bought TikTok ? It seems that the idea is gaining traction. As reported by the BBC, journalists recently asked US President Donald Trump if Microsoft is preparing a bid to buy the social network. And he replied: “I would say yes.” The president then added that there is a lot of interest in the social network, from several companies. But for the moment, Microsoft prefers not to comment on the subject.

However, it is important to remember that Microsoft already tried to buy TikTok's American business in 2020, during Donald Trump's first term. However, the social network ultimately chose Oracle and Walmart. And the acquisition ultimately did not take place.

A solution in 30 days ?

As a reminder, after his inauguration, Donald Trump signed a decree granting TikTok an additional 75 days, when it should have been banned from the United States on January 19. According to the order, the delay is to allow the new administration to “determine how to proceed in an orderly manner to protect national security while avoiding an abrupt shutdown of a communications platform used by millions of Americans.”

Donald Trump also expects a decision to be announced within 30 days. Moreover, other names are circulating. For example, according to a Reuters source, the startup Perplexity AI, which has developed a search engine that competes with Google Search, has submitted an offer to merge it with the American branch of TikTok that would also allow the American government to hold 50% of the shares.

MrBeast, the most followed creator on YouTube, who has more than 113 million followers on TikTok, has also announced his intention to buy the social network, with a group of investors.

  • While it already tried to buy TikTok's American activity in 2020, Microsoft is reportedly interested again
  • Donald Trump has given the social network a 75-day reprieve, which should have been banned on January 19
  • According to the president, many companies would be interested in buying the social network
  • Other names are circulating on the web, including the YouTuber Mr Beast and the startup Perplexity AI, which has developed a competitor to Google Search
