A U.S. airliner, killing a total of 67 people including passengers and crew, collided Wednesday, January 29, 2025 at around 9 p.m. (3 a.m. French time) with an army helicopter over Washington.

American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a military Black Hawk helicopter carrying three service members. More than sixty people died. The plane and helicopter are in the waters of the Potomac River. Some of the victims' identities have been released: a pair of Russian world champion skaters and two Chinese nationals. Two Chinese nationals were on board the plane that crashed in Washington on Wednesday night after colliding with a U.S. military helicopter, the official Xinhua news agency reported Friday, citing the Chinese embassy in the United States. “After a preliminary investigation” , the embassy announced that two Chinese citizens were “among the victims” of this air disaster, according to Xinhua.

The two black boxes of the airliner that crashed Wednesday evening in Washington after a collision with a military helicopter, killing a total of 67 people, have been found, American media announced Thursday. The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder have been recovered by investigators, anonymous sources told CBS News and ABC News . These black boxes were submerged but should be able to be analyzed, the American Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), in charge of the investigation, explained earlier Thursday.
