Pirate IPTV: Google and X (Twitter) targeted by very serious accusations

It’s a well-established tradition. Every year, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) asks copyright holders to share their comments for the publication of its Special 301 Report. It then establishes a list of countries that require special attention in terms of piracy. It is in this context that LaLiga, the Spanish football league, has decided to file charges against Google, Cloudflare and X (Twitter).

“Facilitators&#8221 of piracy

The words are very heavy, since the leaders of Iberian football believe that these services allow pirate offers to flourish:

Although it is not the main objective of this submission, it is important to highlight the important role that certain US-based intermediaries, such as Google, Cloudflare, Coredeluxe and X (formerly Twitter), have played as essential facilitators in the continued rise of piracy throughout 2024.

And LaLiga is even more specific: “These platforms and service providers offer essential infrastructure or services that allow piracy networks to thrive, including anonymization, content delivery network (CDN), domain name system, VPN, hosting, content indexing and social media promotion”.

As our colleagues at TorrentFreak point out, the Mountain View firm has been criticized for the presence of IPTV applications on the Google Play Store and the indexing of illegal services in its search engine.

LaLiga is even more specific and even offers a plan to Google to counter piracy:

The effective solution that Google must implement and enforce is to set up mechanisms that allow for the complete global deindexing of websites and domains that accumulate a high number of deindexing requests. In addition, it is proposed that Google adopt preventive control measures to prevent the indexing of illegal streaming and IPTV services in its search engine in the first place.

Google increasingly denounced

As a reminder, this is not the first time that Google has been singled out for piracy. Italian football officials are accusing it of failings following delisting requests filed since last month.

In detail, the removal of 84 URLs was requested. But only 12% of them were taken into account by Google. Why ? All the others did not exist in Google's search index when the notice was sent, according to the specialized site. The search engine therefore seems to have carried out its mission conscientiously.
