“A few more difficult holidays”: D-300 before the arrival of line 1 at Montpellier Sud de France station

This Saturday, December 21, the mayor of Montpellier and president of the Métropole officially launched the day counter before the extension of tram line 1 to the Montpellier Sud de France station.

Arriving by train today at the Montpellier Sud de France TGV station means discovering a city under construction with its cranes, trenches, barriers and dams. But this landscape has been disrupted and is not very inviting for a good cause. Indeed, in 300 days, on October 18, 2025 to be exact, the hassle of getting to and from the Montpellier Sud de France station will be over, thanks to the extension of tram line 1 to it. An operation that cost 50 million euros.

No need to take your car or the shuttle bus anymore, tram line 1, the busiest in France, outside Île-de-France, will provide service to this station during the next All Saints' Day holidays, allowing all its users to reach the city center of Montpellier in 20 minutes.

So another 300 days to wait. And to endure “a few difficult holidays for the users of this station, but, by All Saints' Day, everything will be sorted“, rejoices the mayor of Montpellier and president of the Métropole, Michaël Delafosse, this Saturday, December 21, on the forecourt of the TGV station, accompanied by a gathering of elected officials and public transport professionals, for the launch of the day counter that will count down the time remaining until the line is actually put into service.

2025: the time for achievements

Between the Covid crisis and the energy crisis, there has been no shortage of implementation difficulties, but “We stayed the course and kept moving forward. So, after the time and the wait, now comes the time for the achievements with this extension, but also line 5 and the bustram which will be added to the kilometers of cycle paths that we have built“, says Julie Frêche, vice-president of the Métropole in charge of mobility.
