Blue Skies Space is developing a unique product in the world. Thanks to its satellites, the British start-up will be able to collect a lot of valuable scientific data. These will then be sold as a service. Explanations.

Blue Skies Space provides astronomical data as a service

Founded in 2014, Blue Skies Space will launch its first Mauve satellite in October 2025 on board of a SpaceX Falcon 9. During a three-year mission, it will observe hundreds of stars in the Milky Wayin the ultraviolet and visible wavelengths. The device will provide crucial information on their composition, temperature, density, mass, distance, luminosity, etc.

This data will allow researchers to study and better understand the magnetic activity of stars, but also to analyze their eruptions and their impact on neighboring exoplanets. But to access it, they will have to pay an annual subscription to the start-up.

This is a first. While there are other companies that collect and monetize space data, most of them operate ground-based telescopes or satellites observing Earth. ” No private company provides astronomical data as a service; we will be the first to do it ,” assures Marcell Tessenyi, co-founder and CEO of Blue Skies Space, in an interview with TechCrunch.

« We have spent many years collaborating with the global scientific community, validating our model and better understand their science and data needs ,” continues the CEO. The company has partnered with institutions in 11 countries, including Boston University and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. However, it has not yet revealed the cost of its annual subscription.

A second satellite specializing in the observation of exoplanets in preparation

On the manufacturing side, Blue Skies Space has chosen to entrust the engineering work to more experienced manufacturers. Its next satellite, Twinkle, will be built by Airbus. It will focus specifically on spectroscopic measurements of the atmospheres of distant exoplanets, during a mission that is expected to last seven years.

Blue Skies Space has raised around $6.5 million since its creation, including $2 million in April from investors including the Japanese group Sparx and the UK-based seed fund SFC Capital. The firm has also received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme.

Its service is a new example of the opportunities offered by new space, which is characterized by increased commercialization and privatization of space activities. Many start-ups specializing in the space are emerging and offering innovative products. “ This new approach provides greater flexibility to the scientific community and complements the large, high-capacity, high-demand facilities typically provided by government agencies  ,” explains Marcell Tessenyi about his offer.
