Like USB, HDMI technology, which allows us to connect our screens, is evolving regularly. And currently, the HDMI Forum, which manages the standards for this technology, is preparing the launch of a new version. Indeed, the HDMI Forum sent a press release to several media outlets, including The Verge, to announce that it will present the new HDMI specifications at a conference on January 6.

For the moment, we have few details. However, the press release also reveals that the new HDMI standard will allow for “a wide range of resolutions and higher refresh rates,” with a new cable. A priori, the new cable should have a better bandwidth, which will allow for increased image quality. The current standard, HDMI 2.1, has a bandwidth of 48 Gb/s and allows the transmission of 4K images at 120 Hz, or 8K at 60 Hz.

Its successor should be the HDMI 2.2 standard, which should therefore allow the transmission of higher quality images. But for the moment, this is only a rumor.

Presentation before CES 2025

It should also be noted that the date chosen by the HMDI Forum to detail the specifications of the new HDMI is fueling speculation. Indeed, the forum will hold its conference one day before CES in Las Vegas, one of the major annual gatherings of the tech sector. As a result, it is very likely that new products compatible with the new HDMI will be presented at this event.

For example, Nvidia has already started teasing its new GeForce RTX 50 series. And it is quite possible that these new graphics cards will be compatible with the new version of HDMI that will be presented on January 6. Similarly, AMD has already indicated that it will launch the first RDNA 4 graphics cards in early 2025. And it is also likely that these new cards will support the new HDMI standard.

  • The HDMI Forum, which manages HDMI standards, will unveil specifications for a new version of the technology on January 6
  • The forum is talking about “a wide range of resolutions and higher refresh rates”
  • The new standard may be supported by upcoming Nvidia and AMD graphics cards
