“This weather is good for our business, people want comforting things!” At the truffle festival, on the Place du Marché, the exhibitors made the best of a bad situation on this Saturday, February 1st. While the cold and continuous rain had set in, customers nevertheless responded in good numbers to come and harvest a piece of the precious mushroom.

Ideal weather for truffles

On Diane and Jean-Luc Viala's stall, smiles are on everyone's lips. “It's really a good season this year for Uzège and Uzès”, enthuses the truffle producer in Montaren. Who notes that with “A rainy spring, rain last summer and lower temperatures than in previous years, the truffles that were born were protected.” Result: quantity is there, but not at the expense of quality. “Look at this, if this is not good, I am no longer a truffle farmer”, jokes Jean-Luc Viala, sniffing a pretty little 22-gram truffle.

From 1,000 to 1,400 euros per kilo depending on the markets

Other good news for the farmer: the return of Tuber melanosporum on wild trees. “We could hardly find any more since 2021.” A crop that is doing as well as the demand on the markets. “We are at around 1,000 euros per kilo. But I have been to places where it was sold for 1,300 or 1,400 euros even… We must not exaggerate though… But even if the situation is not easy for anyone, people are still there. There is a real desire to treat themselves.” And Dominique wouldn't disagree, he who is already dreaming, at the end of this morning, of the pizza with ham, buffalo mozzarella and truffle shavings that he will enjoy this evening thanks to his purchase.

The truffle festival continues this Sunday, February 2, on the Place du Marché in Nîmes, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please note that some merchants do not accept credit cards. On-site catering is available.
