On Friday, Provincial Court Judge Kelly Winchester sentenced Osama Ibrahim to house arrest for the first nine months. This sentence will be served with his sister in Quebec, although he will be allowed to leave the house to work. Once a week, he can also go shopping between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

After the first nine month, Osama Ibrahim will no longer be subject to the curfew, but he will not be able to contact either the victim or her family.

Reading portions of the victim impact statement, Crown prosecutor Christopher Lavigne said the teen suffered from depression and was unable to return to school.

She said her trust in people, particularly the police, has been compromised and she no longer feels safe around authority, the lawyer said .

The victim's family operated a business in the Saint John, New Brunswick area, but had to close it because the victim , who participated in the activities, was no longer able to work after the attack.

Osama Ibrahim was a relatively new RCMP officer and on his first posting in Woodstock, New Brunswick, when he met the victim and her family in June 2021. In January of the following year, he requested to the family the hand of the 16-year-old girl, according to the court.

The mother said the victim was too young to get married and asked the accused to wait until she was at least 19 or 20 years old. The parents agreed that Osama Ibrahim should get to know their daughter.

During the trial, he was revealed that Osama Ibrahim agreed to this arrangement and began visiting the family at their home and business when he was off duty or working overtime at a nearby detachment.

The victim had a romantic interest in Osama Ibrahim at the beginning of the relationship. However, as it progressed, the victim described being grabbed, handcuffed and punched by the accused.

The judge noted that videos presented as evidence showed the use of force was blatant and that this interaction was neither fun nor playful.

Osama Ibrahim is seen hitting the victim. After the attacks, he said he was only joking, but the teenager did not perceive his actions as a joke, the judge said.

During the sentencing hearing, Osama Ibrahim asked the court for mercy. He said he wanted to apologize to everyone, including the family.

His lawyer mentioned that Mr. Ibrahim resigned from the RCMP last week and his resignation is to take effect February 5.
