There are plenty of Netflix-branded films released every week on the streaming platform. So it can be quite difficult to know which movie to watch when you finally settle down on your couch after a long day. To help you make your choice, Netflix presents the top programs among viewers in your country. Right now, it's A Woman at Play which is the most viewed film in France.

A Woman at Play has established itself at the top of the ranking of the most viewed films in France but also in a dozen other countries, such as Italy and Belgium. In less than a week, the feature film has been much talked about. Particularly on social networks. But why is this movie such a hit ?

A Woman at Play, or When a Serial Killer Takes Part in a TV Show

Twilight, In the Air, Pitch Perfect, Scott Pilgrim… Do we still need to introduce Anna Kendrick ? After years in front of the cameras, the actress is launching into directing with her very first film : A Woman at Stake.

For this first, the filmmaker focuses on an unfortunately true story: that of Sheryl Bradshaw who crosses paths with serial killer Rodney Alcala while they were both participating in the American version of Tournez-manège in 1978. During his time on the show, Rodney murdered several women without the police being able to catch him.

The story of the “Dating Game Killer” is chilling and seems completely improbable. However, it is indeed real. As “true crime” is increasingly popular with viewers, Netflix did not fail to jump at the opportunity to recover the footage. In 2023, the film was presented at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023.

A Woman at Playhighlights the journey of a murderer free to move and that of a woman that no one listens to. Welcome to the 70s… For a first production, the spectators salute very good actors as well as a convincing staging even if the story of Sheryl Bradshaw and Rodney Alcala is a little too romanticized for some of them. Screenwriter Ian McAllister McDonald chose to move away from reality a little to make the scenario more credible to moviegoers in 2024. Yes, flirting techniques and morals have evolved between 1978 and 2024. If you're looking for a good thriller that will give you a few chills, A Woman at Stake is available now on Netflix.
