The EduBirdie platform published in January 2023 a study on the first names most frequently associated with people with a high intelligence quotient. The site specializing in writing and academic help analyzed more than 900 first names of members of Mensa (which is the international association of individuals with exceptional intellectual abilities, editor's note) as well as those of winners Nobel Prize winners and renowned scientists.

Genius from birth?

The objective of the study was to identify the most common first names among these individuals considered to be “geniuses”. To do this, each occurrence of first name was counted – taking into account diminutives and spelling variants. For example, occurrences of Will were integrated into those of William and those of Tom into Thomas. This methodology made it possible to establish a list of twenty first names which would be synonymous with increased intelligence.

Among men, the first name John (or Jean in French) rises to the top of this ranking. We obviously think of intellectual figures like John Locke, Jean d’Ormesson, Jean-Paul Sartre and even Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The first names Robert and William occupy second and third places respectively. They are also very popular first names in history, which also probably explains their presence in this ranking.

Jean and Marie

Although the list contains more male names, several female names also stand out in the EduBirdie study. At the top of the list is the first name Marie, which is often associated with Marie Curie, the pioneer of radioactivity and the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. Elizabeth – which is reminiscent of Queen Elizabeth II – and Hélène complete the podium. Other feminine first names are highlighted such as Suzanne, Ada, Barbara, Irène, Jeanne and Nadia.

If Elon (Musk) isn't on this list of genius names, is yours ?
