This year, Apple finally launched its mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro. But while this product is a concentrate of innovation, it is far from seducing the masses. And the reason for this mixed success is the price. Indeed, in France, the base model is sold at 3,999 euros, which is too expensive, even for Apple customers. However, for several months, rumors have been circulating about the development of a more affordable version that, thanks to concessions on the technical sheet, would have a lower production cost.
And today, it is becoming clearer. Citing sources from Digitimes, The Elec and other media, our colleagues at MacRumors explain that Apple is exploring the possibility of equipping the affordable version of the Vision Pro with a screen with a lower resolution. While the Vision Pro has a screen displaying 3,391 particles per inch, its affordable version could make do with 1,500 particles per inch or 1,700 particles per inch. In any case, Apple has already sent requests for information to suppliers, in order to evaluate this possibility.
Additionally, to cut prices, Apple could opt for a different type of display. While the Vision Pro uses an OLED-on-Silicon display, the company could equip the affordable version with a GCS (glass core substrate) OLED display. This other change could also help reduce costs.
200% Deposit Bonus up to €3,000 180% First Deposit Bonus up to $20,000According to a newsletter published by journalist Mark Gurman in June, Apple could even develop a headset that, instead of having its own processor, would connect to an iPhone or a Mac to draw on the necessary computing power. The company could also remove non-essential features, such as EyeSight, an external screen that displays the user's eyes and makes the front of the headset appear transparent.
But as usual, this information should be considered with caution for the moment, since it does not come from an official source. In any case, Apple will have to offer more affordable products to face the competition. It is also rumored that this September 25, during its Meta Connect conference, Mark Zuckerberg's group could present a new Mixed Reality headset called Quest 3S which would be an affordable version of the Quest 3.
