Aged 59, Martine* has been a member of a group called “Emotional and Sexual Addicts Anonymous” in Occitanie for ten years. She shares her testimony. 

What is your profile ?

I grew up in a family where there were only orders and blows. It was around the tables of Dasa that I learned about emotions. What others shared allowed me to bring to the surface things that I had forgotten.

Why do people come ?

They don't come because they have an addiction, but because they suffer from it. Only those who have experienced the same suffering understand me. That's what makes a brotherhood strong. But that doesn't prevent us from having a parallel treatment path.

Are there differences between men and women ?

Many men recognize a strong sexual addiction, and women an emotional addiction. The first job is to identify behaviors. Dasa's strength is the support network, freedom of speech, that everyone is responsible for their recovery.

What about spirituality ?

Like Alcoholics Anonymous, it's the basis of the program. But there is no dogma. You can put whatever you want in the term “higher power”. Mine is to be together. It's very hard for someone addicted to conceive that they won't get there alone.
