The unshakeable Jean-Paul Montanari has definitely turned his back on Montpellier Danse. He attended his last curtain raiser, as director of the festival, on December 18th. Despite his fatigue, the septuagenarian, mask on his face, was faithful to the meeting, in a packed Corum. With the satisfaction of having once again aimed right by programming the hip hop choreographer Amala Dianor. “I rarely make mistakes. I have been programming dance for 45 years. After a while, you don't make mistakes, with time, you know everything”, he confided to Midi Libre, in a long interview, last summer.

“We need a break, change everything”

Director of Montpellier Danse since 1983, Jean-Paul Montanari had arrived from Lyon in the suitcases of his friend Dominique Bagouet. The latter had been called by Georges Frêche to direct the National Choreographic Center founded in 1980. At a time when the two entities are due to merge – their two directors are coming to the end of their mandates – a new page is opening for dance in Montpellier in 2025. “The world has changed and I don't believe in this story of a smuggler. We need a break, change everything!” This is the invitation he extended to the person who will take the reins of the future organization decided by the Region, the State and the Metropolis. However, the roadmap for 2025 is already written. He is delivering a turnkey 45th edition. “I hope to open the 45th festival with a parade, a kind of dance-pride that would start from Peyrou, concocted by the choreographer Salia Sanou. With tutu, tango, etc. From classical dance to popular dance, I want to cover the whole field!” he explained last June. No doubt he will be there again, this time, without supervising.
