An Airbus with the name of Nîmes! The information was released by the X Eurospot account, a Toulouse “spotter” specializing in Airbuses. This new A350-900 was seen on the Tarmac at Toulouse-Blagnac and is now part of the Air France fleet (MSN 714). And by zooming in, we can clearly see that it was named after Nîmes.

“This tradition of naming aircraft, borrowed from the navy, has spanned the ages since the 1930s, explains Air France on its website. The repertoire of names given to Air France planes has evolved over the years, highlighting provinces (Gascony, Guyenne, Auvergne, etc.), adjectives (Actif, Agile, Adroit, etc.), constellations (Cassiopée, Altaïr, etc.), birds (Albatross, Cigogne, Gypaète, etc.) or names of castles (Blois, Fontainebleau, Valençay, etc.) until 1970.”

Already several planes baptized in the South

In 2019, Air France decided to bring this tradition of christening back into fashion. This time, it is the names of cities that are used. The company has not yet made the name of Nîmes official on its baptism map. But we can see that in the region, planes have already been named after Sète, Millau (Boeing 777-300s), Narbonne or Albi (Airbus 1350-900s). And on the other side of the Rhône: Salon-de-Provence (Boeing 777-300), L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (Airbus A220)… The plane named after Nîmes could take off in the spring.
