After years of loyalty, I left Spotify for Deezer

For many years, Spotify has definitely been one of the applications I use the most. It's quite simple: music is the rhythm of my daily life and there is always a good reason to launch a beloved album or a specific playlist. So much so that I accumulate almost 100,000 hours of listening with each Spotify Wrapped. It seems that loyalty is a key value for me since in almost a decade, I have never looked at the competition. Except that… Today, Spotify's prices are increasing and my curiosity, too, is intensifying.

Without drawing a definitive line under Spotify, I wanted to broaden my horizons. See what else is out there. What do I have to lose by giving it a try ? The other music platform that comes to mind, apart from Spotify, is Deezer. The French competitor seems to offer a similar offer, at an equivalent price. Cocorico… So, discover my feedback after more than a month of using Deezer.

New habits to adopt…

When you have spent years using a platform, opting for a competitor is necessarily disorienting. My transition from Spotify to Deezer was not as easy as I would have imagined since I had developed certain automatisms. When a song is playing on Spotify, the Play button is at the bottom right. On Deezer, it's the opposite. I can't tell you the number of tracks I've accidentally skipped when I only wanted to pause them.

Similarly, I have been using the “Add to Queue” feature on the music streaming platform Swedish. So it took me a while to understand that with the same terms, Deezer did not hear the same thing. To get what I wanted, I had to choose “Listen right after” on the app Habits are definitely hard to break…

If these little details really frustrated me At first, I ended up getting used to the changes between Spotify and Deezer. Nevertheless, the French music streaming platform is intuitive and it didn't take me long to get the hang of it.

An algorithm not as precise ?

At first, I really missed Spotify. Deezer’s personalized “Flow” playlists didn’t convince me… At first, at least. That’s not unusual: the algorithm had to get to know me. Deezer and I had to get to know each other, like two new friends.

Little by little, the French platform has everything even managed to make a small place in my heart. The inspired mixes of certain titles prove that Deezer has good arguments. I was able to hear artists or songs that I really like playing, in line with the selected title. Even better? I was able to make great musical discoveries. I improved everything by finally transferring my favorite playlists, allowing the application to know even better my musical tastes and the songs that make my foot tap and my head move.

Despite everything, Deezer's “Flow” playlists remain, in my eyes, a weak point. Less refined than what Spotify can offer, the playlists sometimes offer sounds whose energy is sometimes very far away. No, chaining Luther and Sufjan Stevens doesn't really make sense… And when I want to listen to rap, GIMS and SZA have absolutely nothing to do together. Ultimately, it's in the customization and in the playlists created by the platform that Spotify triumphs over Deezer.

It's unfortunate because, for the rest, the French platform is solid on its supports. Indeed, Deezer displays a very rich catalog, multiple very practical features and excellent audio quality. This allows it to stand up to Spotify at the moment. I am almost certain that by dint of using the application, its algorithm will continue to improve.

Have I definitively left Spotify for Deezer ?

If Deezer was not a disappointment and I was even able to transfer all my playlists ultra easily (and quickly), my heart continues to choose the Swedish music streaming platform. After more than a month of listening on Deezer, I'm happy to find my little habits on Spotify.

It may be a shame on my part. Indeed, Deezer has nothing to be ashamed of in terms of features and stands out as a robust alternative to Spotify. I guess it depends on each person’s tastes and habits. If in your eyes, Spotify has overstepped the mark with its latest price increase, Deezer can easily take over. For my part, I’m not yet ready to switch to the competition. For now…
