Agatha All Along: Has the new MCU series bewitched us ?

Spread the love

© Marvel

More than three years ago, the series WandaVisionwas broadcast on Disney+. It was the very first series of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and the fantasy life of Wanda Maximoff with Vision had obsessed many viewers.

Since then, a certain weariness has settled in the hearts of viewers and the MCU series are no longer as popular as they were a few years ago. Despite everything, the secondary character of Agatha Harkness in WandaVision knew how to seduce us with her sarcasm, so much so that the series Agatha All Along, of which she is the protagonist, has something to tickle our curiosity…

This Thursday, September 19, 2024, the unloved witch of the MCU takes center stage with the series Agatha All Along. This spin-off of WandaVisionbrings together all the magic ingredients to establish itself as the series of the moment. What is it really like ? We zap or watch Agatha All Along on Disney+ ?

A taste of Halloween

If you want to get into the Halloween mood, Agatha All Along is the perfect series. We find the antagonist of WandaVision more helpless than ever. After her confrontation with the Scarlet Witch, Agatha Harkness is only a shadow of herself. She who was nevertheless greedy for power is deprived of hers. You talk about a witch…

Stuck in an illusion less perfect than that of WandaVision, everything changes when our sarcastic witch crosses paths with a goth teenager, played by Joe Locke. A big fan of the great Agatha Harkness, he begs her to help him take the legendary Witches' Road. Their collaboration could be a win-win for both of them. Succeeding through this mythical path made up of magical trials guarantees anyone to obtain “what they are missing”. In Agatha's case, it is her powers. All she has to do now is form a witches' coven (a sort of assembly) to open the famous door that will lead them to the Witches' Road.

< p>If Agatha All Along has more than one turn (of magic) in its bag, the series suffers from the inevitable comparison with WandaVision. Impossible to take it as it is given that it is sold as the spin-off of the series devoted to Wanda Maximoff. Less charming and less surprising, perhaps, but not without interest for all that.

Release a series devoted to a witch a few days before autumn, there's no denying it: it's perfect timing. Agatha All Along brings together all the codes from a good Halloween series and it is watched with pleasure under a blanket with a good pumpkin spice latte. We delight in the many references to famous witches that cinema and television have presented to us over the years.

The strength of Agatha All Along lies in its humor and the sarcasm of its protagonist. We love as much as we hate Agatha Harkness, as endearing and funny as she is mischievous and untrustworthy. Actress Kathryn Hahn seems to have been born to embody the bewitching Agatha Harkness, with a performance that leaves a lasting impression.

But the MCU quickly falls into the caricature of its characters and certain elements of the plot are brought in with (too) big clogs. Which can make you look up and sigh several times. Too bad…

One might think that Marvel and Disney are not taking any risks with Agatha All Along with a rather bland realization.Yet, Marvel has chosen to make Agatha Harkness the first openly bisexual character in its Cinematic Universe. This choice is sure to cause a lot of ink to flow, one way or the other.

Without restoring all its letters of nobility to Marvel and the MCU, Agatha All Along is an ideal series for this beginning of fall and for anyone who loves witches and their rich universe. The first two episodes of the series starring Kathryn Hahn are available to watch on Disney+ now.
