Ahead of iPhone 16 release, study reveals Apple customer motivations

In a few days, Apple will present the iPhone 16 series. And one of the big news from the Cupertino company, for this year, is Apple Intelligence. This is a series of features based on artificial intelligence that will be compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and should also be compatible with all the new models of 2024. Therefore, it is expected that, thanks to this novelty, which will be available this fall in the United States, Apple will see its sales increase. However, a study published by CIRP suggests that it is not the availability of Apple Intelligence that should encourage the most users to buy a new iPhone, but another simple reason: obsolescence.

Over a 12-month period ending in June 2024, CIRP asked its respondents why they want to buy a new iPhone. 44% of respondents said they want to replace a model that has become obsolete. CIRP explains that while some of these people made the decision based on discovering new features, the main motivation is the condition of their old phones, but not the new features offered by Apple. There are also 29% of respondents who explained that their old phones are lost, broken or stolen. Some of these users, who are not primarily motivated by new features, could also wait for good deals to buy an older model, instead of buying a model from the iPhone 16 series.

Otherwise, only 18% of CIRP respondents indicate that they are primarily motivated by new features. And it would be this category of consumers who should rush to Apple Stores to buy the new iPhones on the day of launch. In other words, if the new iPhones, as usual, are going to be a hit, it would be because a good number of users have old models that they need to replace. But it is important to specify that, since this is an American study, caution is still required.

It should be remembered that Apple Intelligence, one of Apple's main new features in 2024, will not be available in the European Union this year. Indeed, due to EU-specific rules, Apple has decided not to launch some new features of iOS 18, for the moment.
