According to data published on January 1 by ASN, the air safety network, this is the worst record recorded in six years in this area, notably due to the two very serious accidents this December, in South Korea and Azerbaijan.

The year 2024 will remain a dark year for commercial aviation worldwide, with a sad toll of 190 crashes resulting in a total of 318 deaths, according to data published this Wednesday, January 1, 2025 by the ASN (Aviation Safety Network), an independent organization that brings together all data related to aviation safety.

The first time that the 300 death mark has been crossed since 2018

According to ASN, we have to go back to 2018 to find an even more negative toll, crossing the 300 victim mark. In 2018, the figure had been greatly exceeded, with a total of 557 victims killed in accidents involving commercial flights.

This 2024 report was particularly weighed down by the two tragedies that occurred in December, that of the Jeju Air Boeing 737 crash on December 29 in South Korea, which caused 179 victims, and that of the Azerbaijan Airlines flight on December 25 in Kazakhstan, with 38 deaths.

62 deaths in August near São Paulo in Brazil

The other major accident of this year 2024 occurred on August 9 near São Paulo in Brazil and left 62 dead.

According to Airlive, another site specializing in aviation news around the world, we are still far from the figures reached during the two most catastrophic years in the recent history of commercial air traffic. In 1985, a grim record was broken with nearly 2,200 deaths in a series of air disasters, due to both human error and ageing aircraft and technology.

“The increase in passenger numbers and rapid expansion of airlines during this period further contributed to operational pressures, prioritising growth over safety,” Airlive estimates.

The other worst year on record was 1972, with 2,027 deaths.
