Already a star of the 7th European Art, the Austrian actress met the young leading man on the set of Christine, a film by Pierre Gaspard-Huit. Love at first sight did not happen. The 20-year-old actress was surprised by “a young guy who was much too handsome, too well-groomed, in a tie, impeccable in a suit that was too fashionable”.

It took several weeks of filming for them to break the ice. “We often asked each other this question about lovers: 'Who fell in love first, you or me ?' We counted: 'One, two, three!' and we answered 'Neither you nor me! Together!'”, wrote Alain Delon in his farewell letter to Romy Schneider. Deeply in love, the two actors lived a stormy story.

“There was always this thing, this fear that it would be revealed; fear that one day someone would say it outright. The strangest thing is that it was said, assured Brigitte Auber, Alain Delon's first love. In Germany in particular, where articles have been published about him à the time of his youth.” Articles that the actor would have read, just like his mother. Articles “in which we said everything”.

Romy Schneider also read these papers. And they turned her upside down, as she confided to one of her close friends. In 1960, the actress had a heated discussion about Alain Delon's sexuality with Karlheinz Böhm. It was there that she allegedly rambled about their intimate life, which “became more and more unbearable because of Delon's bisexual tendencies”, as he wrote.

According to Brigitte Aubert, the articles on Alain Delon's supposed bisexuality were never published published in France. “Oddly enough, these articles did not cross the border. I don't know what support he had, how he managed to stop everything that was written about him…”, adds Brigitte Auber. But according to her, Alain Delon was “very clever and much stronger than people believe”.

Anthony Delon had spoken out about his father's supposed bisexuality. “He's gone, we have to leave him alone now, we have to stop with this and with everything else. It's the memory of the dead that we honor, not that of the living, he told Le Figaro. We have to leave him in peace.”
