The evening of December 31 is an anticipated festive event every year. The Hérault prefecture has taken a number of security measures and the police are keeping a close eye on things. It is also important to use common sense when getting behind the wheel!

No fireworks, no smoke bombs, no firecrackers. The Hérault prefecture has put in place simple rules to avoid excesses as much as possible for this passage to the year 2025. More broadly, the use, carrying and transport of all explosive products are prohibited (since December 24) for New Year's Eve. These are not the only ones concerned. Nor is the transport of fuel in jerry cans, household alcohol or any flammable products. These bans will be lifted on Thursday, January 2 at 8 a.m. The prefecture announces for December 31 “maximum mobilization of law enforcement to protect the population“.

One of the best ways to end the year in style is obviously to watch over your loved ones who are behind the wheel. Car accidents are numerous on the roads of Hérault. The chief of staff of the prefect, Thibault Félix, made this clear by giving some figures during a road check on Thursday, December 26 in Saint-Jean-de-Védas. The number of individuals killed on Hérault roads stands at 52, the number of injured has risen to 978 for a total of 775 accidents in 2024.

78% of French people drink alcohol on New Year's Eve

Sophy Sainten, the general delegate of the Road Safety Association, announced this Friday, December 27, at a press conference that 42% of French people fear an alcohol-related road accident. “This figure used to be around 20% and it has really increased a lot over the last three years“, she added at the same conference. Still according to the national association, 78% of French people drink alcohol on New Year's Eve. So don't forget to nominate your Sam (the one who doesn't drink) to come home, and start a new year off on the right foot.
